We encountered our first serious rain after 25 days of being in Europe. It is much needed as everything is dried out and the rivers are at an all-time low. Oktoberfest ended last Sunday - we missed it on purpose. Our hotel is near the main Oktoberfest grounds and they are still in the process of tearing things down.
Spent the morning doing laundry. German washing machines are notoriously slow due to ecological reasons. We then toured Munich seeing the Marienplatz and ultimately ended up at the HofbrÀuhaus which is one of Munich's oldest taverns that has been around since 1589.
The beers were so big that Paula had trouble lifting her mug with 1 hand. The pretzels were in equal proportion. This is supposed to be a touristy place however due to the shared tables we met a wonderful German couple - he a retired VW Engineer and she a retired Pharmacist. They were amazed at how well we knew the Ein Prosit song (thanks Kitchener Oktoberfest!!).
Things will be a bit more sombre tomorrow as we visit the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site. We are hoping for better weather.
